Improving health without drugs

My name is Dr Rory McGill. This website is an introduction to my work as a holistic doctor. The word holistic comes from the word whole, and in this context refers to ways of improving your health and happiness by paying attention to your body, mind and spirit, but also to your environment and your important relationships.

I believe we all have the potential to improve our health and wellbeing by using our own natural healing abilities, augmented when necessary by natural remedies and other non-drug approaches. I also believe in the power of the directed mind to heal your body. I am ready to act as your guide to discovering or rediscovering the joy of taking control of your own health.

My background is in traditional Western medicine, first of all as a hospital doctor and subsequently as a GP. However, as the years have gone by, I have become more and more convinced that the majority of my patients could be far better helped without recourse to medications and surgery. I do not reject Western medicine, it remains a wonderfully powerful system for treating serious disease and injury, and I continue to practice in this way on 3 days a week in my NHS role. The majority of my patients, however, do not have serious ‘disease’, but they are certainly not well and they are suffering. It is my belief that these people’s illnesses are a sign of imbalance somewhere in their system. This could be related to diet, overwork, relationship issues, stress, traumatic life events or factors in the environment to name some of the more common sources. Western medicine has a tendency to treat such problems by giving medication to take away the symptom, for example, painkillers for a headache, laxatives for constipation, antidepressants for depression and so on. How much better to resolve the stress issue, the postural problem or the unhealthy lifestyle which caused the symptom in the first place?

So the question you need to ask yourself is, ‘Do I want to continue suffering from my symptoms, going to the doctor, taking tablets, or do I want to learn how I can discover better health, so that I wake up every morning feeling alive, looking forward to the day, full of energy and ready for anything and everything life has in store?’. If you answered yes to the first part, that’s not ‘wrong’, it’s what most people are choosing. If, however, you said yes to the second part and you want to challenge yourself to lay claim to the best health you can get, then contact me and arrange an appointment!
