Rehabilitating Sports-Related Injuries
Playing your favourite sport, no matter how experienced you are, will not always guarantee utmost safety. Accidents can strike any time, and you need to be aware of basic first aid. Better yet, you should know what to do in situations like this. In the middle of a thrilling and exciting game, are you prepared to face something unexpected and risky?
Abrasions. An abrasion is generally not life-threatening, except when it is too deep to be considered a cut. Urgent intervention should be provided for wounds near the eye and other delicate organs. Take note of bruises, and be careful not to move the affected limb if you are unsure of what to do. With the presence of abrasions, bruises can also be seen.
Strains. Like abrasions, muscle strains are not very dangerous. However, this can make the athlete weak, so there is a high risk for falls. The athlete should stop playing. The affected area should be compressed and elevated to reduce swelling.
Fractures. Unlike the previously mentioned injuries, fractures may either be life-threatening or not dangerous at all. The prognosis usually depends on the type of bone fractured. If the ribs are broken, because of football injuries perhaps, then the athlete should be rushed to the nearest hospital. Blunt trauma to the head, which is common among tennis players, should not be neglected as well. Internal bleeding might be happening already. Regardless of the bone that is broken, all fractures need to be immobilised.
For minor injuries causing pain and muscle weakness, natural remedies are usually recommended. Acupressure, meditation, homoeopathy and chiropractics are commonly prescribed therapies. Before engaging in any of these, check with your health care provider first. For more information regarding alternative medicine, visit PlymouthHolisticDoctor.co.uk for more information.
