My Work: Therapies
In my holistic practice, I use a wide variety of methods of healing. The relationship between me and my patient will sometimes be like the traditional one, where the patient receives some kind of intervention, such as acupuncture or hypnosis, but perhaps more often the relationship will be more like teacher and student, where I teach the patient ways to heal themselves, for instance by using their mind or changing what they eat.
Some patients’ problems will present as being predominantly physical, others psychological, but I believe that an approach which pays attention to both physical and psychological aspects in every case is the most likely approach to lead to a speedy and successful resolution of the problem. For instance, a person presenting with the physical symptoms of abdominal pain and bloating may need advice on diet and herbal medicines, but is just as likely to be helped by learning relaxation and self-hypnosis techniques. Equally, a person presenting with anxiety or depression is likely to be helped by learning relaxation and having specific psychotherapy, but is also very likely to benefit from taking more exercise, altering their diet and having some acupuncture treatment. So a session with me may involve lots of talking, there may be need for a physical examination, there may be some hypnosis, some acupuncture. There may be tears, but there will nearly always be laughter. There will also be homework, lots of homework! Change can be triggered in the consulting room but it can only really happen out there in your life, so you need to be prepared to take an active part.
So, what problems am I able to help using my holistic approach? The answer is virtually any physical or psychological illness. Before you start to think, ‘who does this man think he is?’ don’t forget that in my other role as a GP, I do get to see ‘virtually any physical or psychological illness’on a daily basis. More specifically however, on the physical side, this approach can help with headaches, indigestion, IBS, asthma, skin complaints, fatigue, chronic pain and high blood pressure to name just a few. On the psychological side, I can help with anxiety, depression, phobias, addictions and psychological trauma such as PTSD.
The holistic approach involves the person taking responsibility for their own health and making a decision to change their way of living and to activate their own life energy. My role is to act as your guide on the journey to discovering your own healing powers and activating your own life energy. Modern scientific discoveries have shown that we all consist of energy in some form. Illness can be seen as a disruption of that energy and healing as a restoration of the healthy energy state. If you are uncertain whether these methods could help you, I would be pleased to have a discussion by phone or e-mail to try and clarify how I might be able to help.
